Born in Harlem, James Baldwin became one of the most influential literary voices of his generation, using his words to challenge racial injustice and explore identity and the human experience. His connection to Harlem makes him an important part of this exhibition. Rather than portraying the weight of his activism, this piece captures a softer side of Baldwin, his warmth, humanity, and unmistakable smile.
